Biography of Gilda Cruz-Romo

Gilda Cruz-Romo was a Mexican operatic soprano known for her performances in dramatic roles from the repertoire of Italian composers, particularly Aida and Tosca. She was born on February 12, 1940, in Guadalajara, Jalisco, the capital of the state of Jalisco, Mexico. She studied at the National Conservatory of Music of Mexico under the guidance of Angela Esquivel.

Early Career

In 1962, Gilda made her professional operatic debut in Mexico City, performing the role of Ortlinde in Richard Wagner's "Die Walküre." Her international career began in 1969 when she debuted at the New York City Opera as Margherita in Arrigo Boito's "Mefistofele," alongside renowned bass-baritone Norman Treigle.

Metropolitan Opera

In 1970, Gilda made her debut at the Metropolitan Opera in New York City, portraying Cio-Cio-San in "Madama Butterfly." She remained with the Metropolitan Opera for the next 24 years until 1984. During her tenure, she performed a wide range of roles, including Nedda in "Pagliacci," Violetta in "La traviata," Manon Lescaut, Sister Angelica in the second part of "Il trittico," Tosca, Aida, Elisabeth de Valois in "Don Carlos," Desdemona in "Otello," Amelia in "Un ballo in maschera," and both Leonora roles in "Il trovatore" and "La forza del destino." She also appeared in opera houses in Chicago, Houston, Dallas, San Francisco, New Orleans, Boston, Philadelphia, Baltimore, and others.

European Career

Gilda also performed extensively in Europe, making her debut at the Royal Opera House in Covent Garden, London, in 1972, and at La Scala in Milan in 1973, both times singing the role of Aida. She achieved a triumph in 1974 with her performance as Luisa Miller in a live broadcast on RAI Torino, alongside Luciano Pavarotti and conducted by Peter Maag. She sang at the Rome Opera, La Fenice in Venice, the Verona Arena, the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, and more. In 1973, she debuted at the Vienna State Opera as Leonora in "La forza del destino" and also performed there in "Madama Butterfly" and "Luisa Miller."

International Performances

Gilda performed in the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow, the Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona, the Teatro Nacional de São Carlos in Lisbon, and the Opéra Garnier in Paris. During the 1988-1989 season, she added the role of Medea in Luigi Cherubini's "Medea" and portrayed Matilde in the American premiere of Pietro Mascagni's "Silvano" at the New Jersey Opera.
